MY DREAMS OF LEVITATION
My Dreams of Levitation is the first work by artist/architect SEAN GRIFFITHS
following the dissolution of the renowned art/architecture practice, FAT, of which Griffiths was a founding member.
The work recreates the first floor rooms of the Georgian house at 11 New Quebec Street, London. The existing rooms are dilapidated in anticipation of the forthcoming refurbishment of the building into luxury flats by the owners.
The rooms retain their Georgian character as a result of the existence of the original joinery details, in particular the skirting boards and the architraves.
Using copies of the existing skirting boards and architraves, which are shifted horizontally and vertically to create a dislocated replica of the space within the existing rooms, the work is intended to intensify the viewer’s experience of the building. At the same time, by utilizing the minimum necessary intervention required to make “architecture”, the piece speculates on the nature of architecture itself, exploring the role of the architectural boundary as the demarcator of public and private space, inside and outside, as the determinant of ownership and as the codifier of space.
Above all the installation is designed to create awkward boundaries and spaces within the rooms and doorways, bringing the visitor into close encounter with the physicality of the architecture, by means of a minimal architectural intervention.
SEAN GRIFFITHS is a practising artist and the principal of the practice ModernArchitect. He is also Professor of Architecture at the University of Westminster and a visiting Professor of Architectural Design at Yale University.
