The Painters Pool
Jem Southam is one of the key figures in British photography having been short-listed for the Citibankprize in 2001 and having international recognition particularly in the USA and UK. All his work has a direct relationship to a body or bodies of water. At each of them the processes of change and transformation are continual and are the result of both natural and human causes. We see how the transcience of time sculpts and morphs the subject.
When asked how he is driven he says 'Being outside and walking around and exploring comes high, its revisiting that chidhood state of going through the hedge at the bottom of the garden to see whats beyond the garden - always in the hopeful knowledge that one can return swiftly if necessary.'
